Tonsils Snoring

The tonsils are clusters of lymphoid tissue in the back of the throat or tongue while the adenoids are a similar mound of tissue in the back of the nose.
Large tonsils may affect the breathing of children in sleep the upper airway of children may be compromised by large tonsils or adenoids. While enlarged tonsils are more often a cause of snoring in children an estimated four out of every 100 middle aged men and two out of every 100 middle aged women have obstructive sleep apnea. The hypertrophy or enlargement of the tonsils can contribute to an obstructed airway which could result in snoring or sleep disordered breathing. Snoring is also a sign of sleep apnea a serious sleep disorder that causes people to stop breathing for brief periods of time while sleeping usually for 10 seconds or more.
